After I painted “Bright Flowers Against Blue,” I decided to go in the opposite direction and create a much more subdued and cool background and table in my new still life series. I wanted to see how those elements would make the warm yellow/orange and magenta flowers stand out. What a delightful surprise to see “Still Life, Subdued” come into being.
Color is so evocative; it creates such a strong resonance and response in the psyche. I actually found myself “falling into” the mood of these colors. My strokes became softer; my heart rate actually slowed down, and my state of mind of was meditative. Fascinating. I’m glad I’m pursuing this direction further. I think there’ll be a lot to say about it when I look back and see if any themes and style emerge.
What colors evoke strong responses in you? Why? I’d love to hear–and learn from–your comments.
